Select Board establishes Harriet Todd Scholarship with $225,000 bequest

LINCOLN — September 21, 2020 — Lincoln Select Board approves $225,000 Harriet Todd Scholarship opening awards to non-resident Lincoln students. The board voted 3-0 Monday to accept the Lincoln Scholarship Committee's proposal carving the late Harriet Todd's $225,000 bequest into a $200,000 trust corpus and a $25,000 non-invested cushion, funding renewable $2,500 awards starting with the class of 2021. The scholarship is the first in Lincoln open to Boston METCO students and Hanscom Air Force Base residents who attend Lincoln Public Schools and graduate from Lincoln-Sudbury or Minuteman. Committee member Carolyn Dwyer, a fourth-grade teacher in Lincoln, said turning away non-resident students who had grown up with her own children "felt awful." The board previously allocated $275,000 of Todd's $500,000 unrestricted gift to Lincoln School auditorium improvements. Rob Todd told the board the proposal "captured Harriet's spirit." The first award is expected in late May or early June 2021.
